The 2017 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series championship came down the wire. The final race of the season decided it all, and it lived up to any and every expectation people had. Entering the night, Tim McCreadie held a small lead over Josh Richards for the points championship, with Scott Bloomquist running third in the points.
It was thought across the industry that as the weekend wore on, it looked like it would take a mistake or a mechanical failure by the McCreadie team, for anyone else to have a chance. That's exactly what happened. Late in the event, a flat tire for Tim, would take him out of the title hunt and hand the championship to Josh Richards and Best Performance Motorsports. Even though McCreadie had issues; he proved his worth on the national stage, as did Richards, and it begs the question, who's the favorite for 2018?
Barring any major changes to the driver rosters, you have to put Josh Richards, Tim McCreadie and Scott Bloomquist at the top again, as early favorites. Drivers like Don O'Neal, Darrell Lanigan and Jimmy Owens are closely behind. Possibly the one to watch, that could upset the three at the top, is 2017 rookie of the year, Hudson O'Neal. Yes, Hudson has a lot of room to grow and he will need to gain a lot of experiences before even thinking about racing for a title, but the young gun proved at times last season, that he can get it done behind the wheel of a late model.
With all that being said, the choice is yours, who's the favorite to win the 2018 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series championship?
